What is malaysian food to you?
Being a multicultural and cosmopolitan country, malaysian food is derived from a number of traditions and cultures. Generally though, we may roughly categorize our malaysian food to few major groups – malay, chinese, indian and nyonya. Malaysian food is heavily influenced by the food of other countries including chinese, and indian as well as the native malay or peranakan style of cooking.
Most of the malaysian food can not be eaten without some spices, and aromatic, combining the rich tastes of the many herbs and spices commonly found in southeast asia. Another ingredient commonly found in malaysian food is santan which is coconut milk.
Malaysian Food from Malay community quiet interesting. One of a traditional accompaniment to meal is a hot sambal made of ground chilli, otak udang (prawn paste) and condiments. Desserts in Malaysia tend to make use of generous amounts of coconut milk.
Local food is a mixture of many elements, and no wonder then that the name of one of the most popular dishes, rojak, is also slang for a haphazard mixture of things. Perhaps the closest thing to a national dish is nasi lemak - rice cooked in coconut milk and eaten with a range of side dishes and condiments. When talking about laksa, there are so many type of laksa depend from which state they come from. Laksa Penang, Laksa Johor, Laksa Sarawak wow sorry to say I prefer to eat Laksa Sarawak and Laksa Johor.
Ikan bakar, which is the local name given to grilled/barbecued fish, is one of my personal hot favorites when it comes to picking the best out of malaysian food.
Malaysian food from the Indian population is quite different from the malay or chinese cuisine. We can say most of the food base on curry powder. Nasi kandar is another famous malaysian food. Do You think nasi kandar is Indian Food?
Yes, another of the local favourite malaysian foods is roti canai. Nobody really knows how roti canai came about to become one of the most popular of malaysian food.
Malaysian Food from the Chinese population based on noodles. The yee meen (pre-fried noodles) or tang hoon (transparent noodles made from green beans), malaysian food offers a few noodle and vermicelli varieties that make for the carbohydrate source.
So what is malaysian food then?
I think the most original malaysian food is mee curry.
